Aiming to make the connected garage a safer haven for your automobile and household goods, the Roost Smart Garage Door Sensor is a Wi-Fi-enabled smart-home accessory that will send customizable alerts to your smartphone based on the opening or closing of the garage door. Set to begin shipping later in Spring 2018, Roost says the device will sell for $40 and is designed to work with the Roost mobile app on Apple iOS and Android smartphones.
Consisting of a small plastic bracket and a sensor enclosure similar in shape to the original Roost Smart Battery, the accessory is entirely wireless and is said to operate for 2 years before the its $10 lithium battery cell needs to be replaced.
Alerts can be tailored to the needs of the homeowner, and can be set to send appropriate alerts based on specific times of the day or when the homeowner drives away from the home. And homeowners and family members can passively check on the status of the door at any time by glancing at the Roost app, or turn off alerts entirely if they desire.
The Roost app is also used to manage other connected home products from the company, including the Roost Smart Battery for smoke detectors and the Roost Smart Water Leak and Freeze Detector. As with all of the company’s products released to date, the Roost RGD-100 Smart Garage Door Sensor is a standalone accessory, meaning it is unable to communicate at this time with other connected home ecosystems and digital assistants, such as Apple HomeKit and the Siri assistant, the Amazon Alexa assistant, or the Google Assistant.
