Deal of the day: $130 Nest Thermostat E at Verizon Wireless

As we are in the process of outfitting our latest Digitized House Connected Home demonstration house and integration lab, the team is constantly searching for connected home products and tech at reasonable prices. Yesterday, we found the Nest Thermostat E at what is likely an all-time low cost: $129.99 at Verizon Wireless, a full $40 off the usual $169.99 retail cost. So we instantly ordered two of them to control the zoned Carrier heating and cooling system in this home in Austin, Texas. These smart thermostats feature a frosted glass display and we fully expect them to virtually disappear once installed on the home’s walls, which are finished in the Silver Screen shade of Pittsburgh Paints.

Another way to save on these and many other smart thermostats is to look for rebates from your local electrical utility. For example, in the case of Austin, the Austin Energy utility has partnered with Nest and offers an $85 per thermostat rebate when the homeowner signs up for Rush Hour Rewards. With this feature activated, the thermostats can be automatically set a few degrees higher during peak energy events—typically hot summer afternoons when air conditioning use drives high electricity demand.

Furthermore, Austin Energy offers a $25 per thermostat Power Partner rebate for installing approved smart thermostats, such as the Nest Thermostat E, Nest Connected Thermostat, ecobee, Honeywell, and others. So in the case of our Nest Thermostat E example, after both rebates are applied the effective cost of each thermostat is just $19.99. That’s an undeniably great and smart deal.
