Smart home technology has become exceedingly popular in recent years. In the U.S., 70% of consumers own at least one smart home device, and most plan to continue adding more.

This kind of technology is wonderful for adding convenience to your life. A smart thermostat can keep your home at the perfect temperature while cutting down your utility bills. A smart speaker system can let you listen to your favorite music throughout the house.

Beyond convenience, though, smart technology is practical. It can keep your home and family safe when you use the right devices.

Smart Tech Helping Build Sustainable Homes

So, whether you want to keep your property safe from natural threats or from anyone trying to do harm, how can smart tech help?

Smart Security Systems

No one wants to think about someone trying to break into their home. Unfortunately, even the safest neighborhoods experience the occasional crime.

Given a Security cameras, such as this Google Nest Cam IQ, are among the most popular smart home accessories. Thankfully, there are several smart devices you can use to deter thieves, and eventually catch any culprit that tries to wreak havoc on your home. Some of the ways to improve your home safety include:

  • A smart door that can only be unlocked with your fingerprint
  • Security cameras that can be displayed on your phone
  • Setting up your light and appliances to turn off from your phone
  • Motion-sensor lighting

These features can be especially helpful if you’re away and you want your home to look active and lived-in, but they can be used any time. Plus, a high-tech security system can boost your home’s value, so it’s an investment you can feel comfortable about.

Home Maintenance

Smart technology can keep you safe from human threats, but it’s also great for dealing with problems out of your control, including general home maintenance issues.

Unless you’re a contractor or home inspector, it’s not uncommon for maintenance issues to go unnoticed until they become big (and potentially expensive) problems. Using smart tech, you can identify these issues before they get out of hand.

One of the best pieces of tech to start with is a smart water monitor. This device can detect leaks in your home, including pipes in the walls, send an alert to your phone, or even automatically turn off the water main. You can call a plumber to come fix the problem before you have a mess on your hands.

Smart technology also makes maintenance scheduling easier. Using a digital device, you can set up reminders for maintenance scheduling, sign up for subscription services to regularly receive parts, and keep track of which items have been worked on in the past. Some smart appliances can even alert you when they aren’t working properly or need repairs, taking the guesswork out of it for you!

Protection and Prevention

Finally, smart technology can keep you and your family safe by making sure everything in your home is as it should be. For example, installing a smart smoke alarm that can detect levels of CO as well as smoke can protect you from a fire, sending an alert to your phone.

There are also smart air quality monitors that are helpful for family members with respiratory issues. If the air quality in your home is concerning, you’ll receive an alert right away so you can take action. Some devices can even tell you what’s causing the air quality issue within the home, or which area of the house is the worst.

Installing these proactive and preventative devices can make a big difference in everyone’s health and safety. Smart home technology is here to stay and will only continue to get more innovative over time. It’s okay to start small with one or two smart devices that fit your needs. Over time, you can continue to add more and feel more confident in the safety and security of your home.
