At CES 2020, August Home has announced a new home security product, the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock. In contrast to existing August smart locks, this product has an onboard Wi-Fi radio, obviating the need for the separate Connect Wi-Fi Bridge. August says the lock will have a suggested retail price of $229 when it begins shipping.
Similar but Smaller
This new lock has a cylindrical form factor similar to the August Smart Lock Pro, but is 45% smaller in volume and 20% slimmer—making it closer to the size of a standard door knob. And while August has been acquired by multi-national door security company ASSA ABLOY, the new lock was designed by August co-founder and designer Yves Béhar.
That lineage is apparent, as the Wi-Fi Smart Lock takes its aesthetic cues from the classic August smart lock body design, while adding flair through its sculptured cylinder walls.
All August smart locks, including this latest product, retain the exterior portion of the deadbolt, existing key access, and existing door handles or knobs. The smart lock body then replaces the interior portion of the existing deadbolt.
Deep Integrations Part of Package
Connectivity-wise, this August smart lock is on par with other August products. These locks will work with the August app, as well as Apple HomeKit, Apple Watch, Apple Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and through still more integrations. They also support the August DoorSense technology for confirming door locking status, and the Auto-Lock and Auto-Unlock features.
The smart lock will be available in black or silver. We will take a deep look at it when shipment begin in early 2020.
