The August Smart Lock and Smart Lock Pro have gained new direct, software-based integration with Samsung SmartThings, without the need for Z-Wave. While SmartThings integration has been available previously with the Z-Wave-radio-equipped August Smart Lock Pro, the new integration brings the rest of the August smart lock line into the SmartThings fold when used with the August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge.
August, Yale, and Emtek Smart Locks to Benefit
This new integration announced by August also extends to other products from the ASSA ABLOY family of brands, including Yale Connected by August Locks (Assure Lock SL, Assure Lock Touchscreen, Assure Lever Lock, and others with the Connected by August kit), and the Emtek EMPowered Lock. August says the new SmartThings integration capability will roll out to customers in time for CES 2020 in January. August, by the way, was acquired by multi-national lock and access control company ASSA ABLOY in 2017.
Homeowners wanting to integrate their August, Yale, and Emtek smart locks with SmartThings will not need a separate SmartThings hub installed in their home, since the August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge is all that is needed.
Full SmartThings Ecosystem Integration
Once integrated with SmartThings, all of these smart locks will appear in the SmartThings app, and can be opened and closed through a tap on the lock tile. The tile will reflect the opened or closed status of the lock, and a long press will reveal recent activity history, status of the battery, and settings.
Furthermore, these locks can be included in SmartThings Automations in tandem with any other accessories paired with the SmartThings ecosystem. For instance, when a door fitted with an August Smart Lock Pro is opened, a connected smart fan could be set to turn on.
For homeowners with Samsung TVs, the SmartThings app running on these flat screens can be another option for controlling an August smart lock and receiving notifications when the door opens and closes. Most 2018 through 2019 Samsung QLED sets can run the SmartThings app, but be sure to check the Samsung website to see if your TV supports this feature.
